HPU Ninth in PacWest Women's Preseason Poll

IRVINE, Calif. – The PacWest Conference women's soccer coaches picked Hawai'i Pacific University to finish ninth in the annual PacWest Preseason Women's Soccer Poll announced Tuesday by the conference office.

The Sharks, 6-6-6 overall in 2018 and 4-3-4 in the PacWest for seventh place, received 56 total points in the poll for ninth, 13 points ahead of Academy of Art in 10th and four points behind Notre Dame de Namur in eighth.

Three-time PacWest champion Point Loma was a unanimous choice of the 12 head coaches as the preseason favorite for 2019 with 144 points. Concordia Irvine was picked second with 123 points, with Azusa Pacific third at 108 points and Biola fourth with 102 points.

Fresno Pacific was tabbed fifth with 97 points, just ahead of Hawai'i Hilo with 95 points in sixth. Dominican (Calif.) chalked up 66 points for seventh, with NDNU, HPU and ART U next. Holy Names received 22 point for 11th, while Chaminade collected 20 points for 12th.

Defending PacWest Player of the Year Julia Glaser of Point Loma was chosen the 2019 PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, while Isabella Angotti-Jones of Concordia Irvine was chosen Preseason Defender of the Year and Point Loma's Emma Hinson was voted Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

HPU did not have a selection on the Preseason All-PacWest Team that included the award winners along with UH Hilo sophomore defender Jodi Lillie. Defender Lauren O'Malley and midfielder Abbi Swanson of Point Loma joined forward Glaser and keeper Hinson on the team, with forward Carmany Jones joining Angotti-Jones from CUI on the squad. NDNU forward Susan Whitney and midfielder Vanessa Sanchez were honored, as was Biola midfielder Katelyn Penner and defender Madyson Brown, and Azusa Pacific midfielder Emmy Koflanovich.

The Sharks open the season on Sept. 12 at home. HPU faces Dallas Baptist of NCAA Division II's Lone Star Conference in a match scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Waipio Soccer Stadium.
