Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sharks Open Season With Back-to-Back Battles Against GNAC Opponents

HONOLULU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University Women's Basketball tipped off the 2025–26 season at home this weekend, hosting two strong GNAC opponents inside the Shark Tank. The Sharks competed hard in both matchups but came up short, falling 72–49 to Alaska Anchorage on Friday before dropping a 58–44 contest to Saint Martin's on Saturday.

Alaska Anchorage 72, HPU 49 (Nov. 14)

Senior guard Mia Frye opened the season with an 11-point performance, attacking the lane and giving HPU steady offense throughout the night. Jalen Samuel added 9 points, while Alana Roberts finished with 8 points, a team-high 4 assists, and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes.

HPU stayed within five through the opening quarter, trailing 17–12, but Alaska Anchorage used a 19–9 second quarter to pull away. The Seawolves held a 43–37 rebounding advantage and turned 12 HPU turnovers into 25 points.

The Sharks closed strong, posting their best offensive quarter in the fourth—shooting 41% and knocking down four of their five made threes in the final frame.

Saint Martin's 58, HPU 44 (Nov. 15)

The Sharks returned to the floor Saturday for a physical defensive matchup with Saint Martin's. Junior Mya Hatchett paced HPU with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Samuel added 9 points and Roberts grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the Sharks on the glass.

HPU battled evenly early, tying the game 23–23 at halftime after a balanced opening stretch. Saint Martin's found separation at the free-throw line, finishing 21-for-28, while the Sharks attempted just 10 from the stripe. Turnovers again proved costly, with the Saints converting 23 HPU giveaways into points.

HPU saw improved perimeter shooting, hitting six three-pointers, including makes from Kyla Hopton, Kyra Tanabe, Lucia Ricci, Samuel, and Serenity Santos.
