Sharks Split Doubleheader with Chaminade at Sand Island

HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific earned a hard-fought split Saturday afternoon at Sand Island, rallying for a 10-8 win in game one before falling 13-5 in the second matchup against Chaminade.

Game One: Hawai'i Pacific 10, Chaminade 8

The Sharks (3-6) jumped out early and withstood a five-run surge from the Silverswords to secure the opener behind timely hitting and strong relief pitching.

HPU struck for four runs in the first inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and clutch hitting. Brianna Rodela delivered a key RBI single, while Danielle Cote added a sacrifice fly to help build early momentum.

Chaminade answered throughout the middle innings, taking an 8-6 lead in the fifth, but the Sharks responded immediately. Taryn Hirano sparked the rally with an RBI single, and Alexis Oshiro delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 8-8. Makayla Pagampao followed with an RBI single to give HPU the lead for good at 9-8.

Naomi Cummings earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings and limiting the Silverswords to just two hits down the stretch. Offensively, HPU totaled 15 hits, led by Pagampao's 3-for-3 performance and three-hit efforts from Jade Retuta and Miquela Leopoldo. Cote drove in three runs, while Oshiro added three RBI.

Game Two: Chaminade 13, Hawai'i Pacific 5

In the nightcap, Chaminade responded with a powerful offensive performance, scoring 11 runs across the third and fourth innings to pull away.

HPU struck first in the opening inning when Leopoldo drove in a run on a fielder's choice. The Sharks added three runs in the third, highlighted by an RBI single from Alexis Oshiro and a run-scoring groundout from Pagampao. Felicia Tanno also contributed offensively, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base.

However, the Silverswords used extra-base hits and aggressive baserunning to build separation, collecting 15 hits in the contest. HPU recorded seven hits in the loss.

The split moves Hawai'i Pacific to 3-7 on the season as the Sharks continue conference play.
