HONOLULU — Hawai'i Pacific battled back from an early deficit to claim a dramatic 9-8 victory in game one before falling 14-5 in game two as the Sharks split a Tuesday doubleheader against Jessup University at Sand Island.
In the opener, Jessup jumped ahead early with three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second to build a 5-1 lead. The Warriors extended their advantage to 7-1 in the fourth after a two-run triple from Rebekah Beasley.
The Sharks responded with a game-changing sixth inning. Makayla Pagampao started the rally with an RBI single before Danielle Cote followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run. Miquela Leopoldo delivered the biggest hit of the inning, lining a two-run double to left field, and Brianna Rodela capped the surge with a two-run single to center as Hawai'i Pacific scored six runs to tie the game at 7-7.
Jessup briefly regained the lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but the Sharks answered again in the bottom half. Cote tied the game with an RBI single before Leopoldo followed with another run-scoring hit that brought Alexis Oshiro home for the go-ahead run.
Trinity Williams earned the win in the circle for Hawai'i Pacific, allowing eight runs over six innings of work. Lily Pardini secured the final three outs to record her first save of the season and seal the 9-8 comeback victory.
In the second game, Jessup's offense carried the momentum early. The Warriors scored four runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take control of the contest. Jessup continued to extend the lead throughout the afternoon, finishing with 14 runs on 12 hits.
Hawai'i Pacific answered in the third inning when Taryn Hirano tripled to left field to drive in two runs before Jade Retuta added an RBI groundout. The Sharks later cut into the deficit with a two-run single from Retuta in the fifth, but Jessup maintained control and closed out the 14-5 win.
Hirano led the Sharks in the second game with a triple and two RBI, while Retuta added three RBI. Cayleigh Naito and Felicia Tanno each scored twice.
Hawai'i Pacific now sits at 4-8 on the season following the split with Jessup.
