Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, CA (March 24, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (14-10, 6-8) started its mainland road trip today by taking on PacWest competitor Dominican University of California (5-18, 4-12). The doubleheader concluded the season series between the two schools and saw HPU take both games in a sweep (12-7, 4-1).
Game one proved to be a slugfest between the two team's offenses. Both HPU and Dominican seemed to be able to score at a whim, as only two innings were played without a run scored by either team.
The Sharks got a head start on Dominican in the second inning.
Mari Kajiwara walked with the bases loaded to drive in the first run of the game.
Sharae Esprecion followed with a single to left field to drive in another. Then the Sharks capped off their rally when
Dorian Acierto drove in two with a double to center making it a 4-0 lead.
The Sharks struck again in the third inning when Kajiwara once again walked with the bases loaded for her second RBI of the game. Esprecion also walked for an RBI, stretching the lead out to six.
Dominican made it a game however, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third.
In the fourth inning,
Keila Elderts, who was celebrating her birthday, flew out to right field and drove home the Sharks seventh run in
Noelani Boyer.
Dominican answered back in the fifth inning with two runs to make the score 7-6. The seventh inning was similar as Dominican punched across the tying run.
In extra innings, HPU took over, the Sharks struck for five runs in the eighth.
Toni Baysa tripled home two runs to start the rally and later scored on a wild pitch. Acierto then singled on the infield to score Kajiwara. Acierto capped the scoring when
Kiana Wolfe reached on an error.
Shark starter
Kristen Caskey (6-4) ended up going the distance and securing the win for HPU.
The second game was much more modest when it came to run scoring.
In the third inning, Boyer doubled to deep left field, driving in Acierto. Dominican also scored in the third to tie the game at one run apiece.
Alexa McCoin would relieve starter
Paige Crawford in the third inning after just 2.1 innings of work. Walks were to the detriment to Crawford, who otherwise threw well.
The score remained tied at one until Boyer struck again in the fifth. The Carson, CA native drove a three-run homerun out of the ballpark to make the score 4-1 Sharks. It was the first long ball of her career.
The scoring ended there and HPU picked up the sweep. McCoin (3-2) earned the win out of the bullpen with 4.2 innings of work while giving up just one hit.
The Sharks take on Holy Names University in Oakland tomorrow (March 25th).
