Box Score 2 OAKLAND, CA (March 25, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (15-11, 7-9) split today's doubleheader that comprised the season series with Holy Names (4-30, 3-17). HPU bludgeoned the home team 11-3 in the opener and then lost game two 9-7.
In the first game the Sharks pounded out 10 runs in the first inning to essentially put the game away early. Noelani Boyer supplied the first two runs for the Sharks, as she singled to right center to score both Mari Kajiwara and Dorian Acierto. Kayla Sanchez then walked with the bases loaded for an RBI and was followed by Keila Elderts, who tripled to clear the bases. After an infield single by Toni Baysa, Elderts stole home while Baysa stole second. The rally was capped off by an inside the park homerun (5) by third baseman Acierto to score three and put the Sharks ahead 10-0.
Holy Names was able to put up two in the second inning and another one run in the fifth but that was all it would get against Shark ace Kristen Caskey.
Caskey improved to 7-4 on the season, she went six innings in the mercy rule game, allowing three runs with three strikeouts. She also had a good day at the plate, going 2-4 and scoring a run.
In game two, HPU again jump out to the early lead scoring three runs in the first inning. Shark starting pitcher Paige Crawford singled to right, scoring two. Crawford later scored when Carolann Toyama doubled down the right field line.
The Sharks' lead was short lived however with Holy Names scoring seven runs in the second inning.
HNU later brought home two more runs in the fourth inning, which become important insurance runs.
In the sixth inning, the Sharks began their attempt to get back into the game. Sienna Santiago started off the scoring with a single to right to score Toyama. She was followed by senior Elderts who singled up the middle, driving in two more to make it 9-6.
In the seventh inning, Kajiwara singled down the left field line and scored Santiago, but a comeback wasn't in the cards this game as HPU fell 9-7.
Toyama had a spectacular day at the plate, hitting both a triple and double in the second game. Elderts was also great going 3-8 in the doubleheader with five RBI.
Acierto remained red hot, over her past five games she has gone 11-21 (.524) at the plate, scoring nine runs, belting three homeruns while driving in 10.
The Sharks now head to Turlock, CA to compete in the Turlock CVB Tournament of Champions. The first game is on March 27th against Saint Martin's University with first pitch at 8:00 am.
