Box Score 2 KANEOHE, HI (March 9, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (9-3, 2-2) played its second league series against a PacWest contender in Cal Baptist (20-6, 9-3) on Monday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Field. The Sharks managed a split in the day's doubleheader, winning the opener 4-1 before falling 9-3 in game two.
Game one of the doubleheader was all
Kristen Caskey, as the ace of the staff looked dominant in her start. After being roughed up in the first inning on three consecutive hits to start the game, she settled down and struck out the side. Caskey effectively shut down the Lancers offense completely, retiring the next 20 batters before allowing another hit. Her final line was seven innings, four hits, three strikeouts, and no walks as her command was on point.
As for the offense,
Noelani Boyer gave the Sharks the lead in the third with a single up the middle that drove in two. Then, in the fourth,
Keila Elderts singled up the middle to score
Toni Baysa who reached on a triple. In the sixth inning, it was Elderts again to drive in the run, scoring
Kristy Washizaki on a sacrifice fly to center.
Sharae Esprecion also had a good game at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Caskey improved her record to an impressive 4-0.
Game two of the doubleheader started out looking optimistic for the Sharks. After a quick one-two-three inning in the top of the frame, HPU struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, off of three straight hits. The big blow was HPU's first homerun of the season, by
Dorian Acierto.
Unfortunately, the Lancers offense showed off for the rest of the game. CBU scored two runs in the second inning and then another four in the fourth, chasing starter
Alexa McCoin from the game in a very uncharacteristic start. She was replaced by game one starter Caskey who tried and stop the bleeding but did not fare much better.
The Lancers scratched out one more run in the fifth inning and then two in the sixth off of Caskey, before she too was replaced by
Paige Crawford. Crawford threw well for the rest of the game, but the offense was not able to battle back this time.
The Sharks take on Azusa Pacific on Wednesday (March 11) at Howard A. Okita Field with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:00 pm.
