Box Score HONOLULU, HI (November 27, 2014) – Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball (4-1) fans had a lot to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day as HPU hammered Saint Thomas Aquinas College (2-2) 78-52 in a neutral site game played as part of the Oahu Classic.
HPU led wire-to-wire, controlling the entire game. By the time that the New York natives settled in, it was 8-0 HPU, including two buckets from
Morganne Comstock. STAC briefly cut the lead to four with 16:05 to play in the opening half, but an 11-0 run by HPU removed any doubt.
Chenise Peone drilled one of her four three-pointers to put HPU up 20 at the 8:24 mark of the first period. Late in the half,
Kylie Huerta got to the basket to put HPU up 35-8, which was the high water mark of the half.
HPU led 35-10 at the break, but it could have been more. HPU shot an uncharacteristic 14-37 (37.8%) from the field; however the story was HPU limiting the opponents to just 3-24 (12.5%) in the opening half. STAC's 10 points tied the HPU program record for least points allowed in a half, tying Chaminade's effort in February of 2011.
With 14:45 to go, Peone hit another three-pointer to give HPU its biggest lead of the season, 36. With the game decided, HPU's starters saw scare playing time in the second half. The half was played almost even overall; HPU earned a one-point advantage.
Peone and
Veanne Navarro each scored a game-high 17 points. Peone was a monster, adding a game-high 14 rebounds to go with four assists, four steals and a block. In just 20 minutes of action, Comstock notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman
Breanna Mackenzie also hit double-figures in scoring with 11 points.
HPU opens PacWest play as BYU-Hawaii visits the Neal Blaisdell Center on December 4th at 4:30 p.m.
