Box Score ANCHORAGE, AK (December 21, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (8-2) lost 109-83 to third-ranked Alaska Anchorage (12-0) in front of 873 people at the Alaskan Airlines Center on Sunday evening.
Most of the HPU highlights came early on in this game, HPU raced out to a 5-0 lead on a three-pointer by
Chenise Peone and a pair of foul shots from
Kylie Huerta.
Morganne Comstock made a layup with 16:52 left in the opening half to make it 10-8; it was unfortunately the last lead of the night for HPU.
Peone knocked down a jumper to tie the game with 13:41 to play, but from there the Seawolves showed why they are ranked third in the nation. A 12-0 run gave the home team a 27-15 lead at the 10:54 mark, HPU did not recover.
HPU had an uncharacteristically cold shooting night, the Sharks average better than 47% shooting on the season, which is tops in the PacWest. However, in this game HPU was limited to 39.1% (25-64). Anchorage enjoyed the home court advantage, shooting 51.4% (38-74) from the floor and 50% (8-16) from deep.
Comstock put up big numbers in the loss with a season-high 28 points to go with 14 rebounds and two blocks. Peone,
Veanne Navarro, and
Breanna Mackenzie each scored 17 points. Huerta had a game-high eight assists to go with six rebounds.
The Sharks close out the 2014 regular season with a game against Madonna University, an NAIA school from Michigan, on December 30th at Mid-Pacific Institute at 3:00 pm.
