Box Score HONOLULU, HI (January 8, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (11-2, 7-0) continued to roll on Thursday night with an 89-64 win over visiting Notre Dame de Namur (2-11, 0-7) at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
The Sharks turned a one-point halftime deficit into a laugher with a strong second half. HPU outscored the visitors 54-28 in the second frame.
Most of the first half was a close contest, but NDNU grabbed a nine-point lead late in the half. However, an 8-0 run by HPU over the final 3:02 cut the halftime deficit to 36-35.
The Sharks kept the momentum going into the second half and took the lead 14 seconds into the half on a lay in by Veanne Navarro. The Argos briefly retied the game, but HPU retook the lead on another Navarro basket and led for the final 19:13. From there, the flood gates opened.
Jessi Reeves scored to give HPU a 56-46 lead with 12:09 to go. It was Kylie Huerta who gave HPU its first 20-point lead on a three-pointer with 8:33 left. The lead eventually swelled to 29 late before the clock ran out on another HPU win.
Morganne Comstock rewrote her name in the record book, breaking her record for most defensive rebounds in a game with 18. The senior eclipsed her own mark of 16 against Central Washington last season. Overall, the post player was unstoppable totaling 21 points and 20 rebounds.
All five starters registered double-figure points led by Comstock. Chenise Peone (16), Navarro (14), Huerta (12), and Reeves (10) all had good offensive nights. Navarro (eight) and Peone (seven) helped HPU win the rebounding battle 54-33. Huerta dropped a game-high 13 assists, one shy of her career best.
The Sharks are back in action is Saturday when Fresno Pacific visits Moanalua High School at 1:00 pm.
