Women’s Basketball Clinches Postseason, Moves Back into First

Box Score SAN DIEGO, CA (February 13, 2015) – The Hawai'i Women's Basketball Team (19-4, 14-2) clinched a spot in the PacWest Tournament with a 68-64 win over Point Loma (14-10, 12-5) on Thursday night.  The win, coupled with a California Baptist loss, gives HPU a game and a half lead in first place.

The Sharks led 11 seconds into the game when Veanne Navarro opened with a three-pointer; HPU owned the lead for the entire first half. HPU was in front 21-18 with 10:43 to play in the opening half when the Sharks scored the next seven points to take a 10 point lead. Loma, however, worked the lead down over time and trailed by four (38-34) at the half.

HPU remained in front until there was 9:47 left in game. Loma took the lead three different times in the second half, but never by more than one point. Morganne Comstock's old fashioned three-point play with 4:32 to go put HPU back in front for good. The Sea Lions trimmed the lead to one with 2:06 remaining, but the Sharks went 5-6 from the foul line in the final moments to ice the game.

Navarro was exceptional; she scored a career-high 23 points on 6-11 shooting from the floor, 3-4 from distance and a perfect 8-8 from the line. Comstock racked up her 14th double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Chenise Peone was her consistent, effective self with 12 points and 12 boards. Kylie Huerta again flirted with a triple-double as she tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Neither team shot the ball well from the floor. The Sharks won the game at the line, converting 15-17 (88.2%) while the home team could only muster 14-21 (66.7%). HPU also managed to hit three more three-pointers than Loma.

HPU next travels to Azusa Pacific on Saturday for the final game in So Cal.
