Softball Takes Both Ends of In-Region Twin Bill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KANEOHE, HI (February 7, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (4-0) won both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Simon Fraser (0-2), out of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), by scores of 3-1 and 6-2.

Game one opened with lots of offense, but both pitchers settled down in the hour and 45 minute game.

SFU drew first blood to open the contest, the Clan scored one but HPU starter Kristen Caskey left the bases loaded.

HPU quickly answered in the bottom the first inning with a pair of runs to take the lead. Keila Elderts started the rally with a walk; she stole second and then took third on a wild pitch. Noelani Boyer then tied the game with a single down the left field line. She made it to third after back-to-back walks of Kayla Sanchez and Dorian Acierto and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Nicole Viena.

The two runs were enough for Caskey, but HPU added another run in the second. Elderts this time drove in the run with a single as Courtney Ahlo scored. Ahlo reached on a walk and was helped around the bases by a Toni Baysa single and a SFU error.

The Clan failed to rally against Caskey; she set SFU down in order in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. The right hander earned her second win and complete game in as many opportunities, Caskey sports a 0.50 ERA in the early season.

Baysa was sensational in the opener; she went 2-2 with a walk and stolen base.

Two HPU defensive miscues led to unearned runs for SFU, four-time NAIA Champions, in the first and second innings of game two.

The Sharks responded by tying the game in the third inning with a two-RBI double by Boyer that scored Elderts and Sharae Esprecion. HPU took the lead with two more runs in the fourth frame when Esprecion and Elderts each had RBI hits. The offensive onslaught continued in the fifth then two more Sharks crossed the plate. Chelsea Cramer picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Kiana Wolfe knocked in Acierto with a single to right.

Junior transfer Paige Crawford was fantastic on the mound for HPU. She only surrendered two unearned runs in six innings of work. Now 2-0, Crawford has allowed one earned run in 13 innings as a Shark.

Baysa, Cramer, Boyer and Esprecion each had two hit games. Elderts swiped two bases.

Both teams tested depth in game two as a combined 32 players saw action.

HPU will host another GNAC team on Tuesday (2/10) as Western Washington visits Howard A Okita Field at 1:00 pm.
