Box Score

ANCHORAGE, AK (March 13, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (25-5) certainly has no reason to hang their collective heads after beating the old school record for wins by six games. However, that is little consolation right now as HPU was upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 77-69 to California Baptist (25-6).

Credit the Lancers for a hot start to the contest, leading by seven points just three minutes into the game. CBU kept the lead for the rest of half and led by as many as 14 with 3:26 to play. However, the light came on for the Sharks from that point, HPU used an 8-0 run to close the gap to six points at the half (39-33).

HPU kept the momentum early in the second half, Veanne Navarro got to the basket to cap a 9-2 spurt that gave HPU its first lead (42-41) since the opening seconds. After a CBU bucket, Navarro hit a long ball followed by a Chenise Peone layup to give the Sharks their biggest lead of the ballgame at 47-43 with 15:48 to go.

CBU rebuilt a six-point lead by the 10:47 mark, but back came HPU, the Sharks tied the game at 59 and 62. West Region and PacWest Player of the Year, Morganne Comstock, hit back-to-back jumpers to retie the game at 68 with 5:55 to play. Then the HPU offense went colder than the Anchorage air, HPU scored just one point the rest of the way, a free throw from Jessi Reeves.

Comstock was sensational in her last game as a Shark, she posted 22 points, nine rebounds, five steals, four blocks and four assists. Several of the blocks would make Dikembe Mutombo blush. Breanna Mackenzie added 14 points while Peone scored 12, both added five rebounds. Navarro had a strong all-around game with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kylie Huerta dished out eight assists with just one turnover to go with seven points and three steals. Freshman Reeves showed promise for the future with eight boards.

HPU forced 22 turnovers while committing only eight, but it wasn't enough to overcome CBU's 29-58 (50%) shooting night.
