Box Score 2 TURLOCK, CA (March 28, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Softball Team (17-14) split a doubleheader in the Turlock CVB Tournament Of Champions against Humboldt State (26-10) and San Francisco State (8-25). HPU dropped the opener 2-0, but rebounded with a 7-4 win.
Against Humboldt in game one, the Sharks' offense was held quiet throughout. HPU struggled to get anything going and couldn't manage to string enough hits together to push across that crucial first run.
Sharks' starter
Kristen Caskey (8-5) was once again dominant. She scattered eight hits in eight innings of work, going the distance in the extra inning game. She gave up just two runs, one earned.
In game two, HPU came out with a new found fire at the plate. After being held scoreless through the first two innings, the bats came alive and the runs started to pour in.
Sharae Esprecion doubled home a run to start the scoring in the third inning. Then
Kayla Sanchez singled through the middle of the infield to score Esprecion.
In the fourth,
Keila Elderts scored
Courtney Ahlo with a single of her own.
Dorian Acierto followed with an RBI double to right field making it a 4-0 game.
The fifth inning saw HPU push the lead out even further when senior
Toni Baysa reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Sanchez. Later
Nicole Viena was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a painful RBI. Elderts then drove in her second run by also reaching on a fielder's choice.
SF State tried a comeback in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs, but the Sharks held off the Gators and put this one in the win column.
Starter
Alexa McCoin lived dangerously all game, giving up 10 hits in her five innings, but managed to allow just the four runs, three of them being earned.
Kristen Caskey finished off the game in the circle, going the last two innings and allowing just one hit while earning the save.
HPU closes out the TOC in the Silver Bracket on Sunday with a game against Cal State Monterey Bay. If the Sharks win, they would play one additional game.
