Box Score HONOLULU, HI (November 23, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (2-1) opened the home portion of the schedule with an 85-77 comeback win over Minnesota-Crookston (1-3) on Sunday afternoon at Moanalua High School.
The Sharks rallied from 11 points down in the second half to win against Minnesota-Crookston, a Division II school from the Northern Sun Conference.
Kylie Huerta was sensational in leading the comeback; the senior played all 40 minutes and registered game-highs in points (24) and assists (4).
Both sides traded baskets in the early part of the game. A jumper by Huerta with 11:23 left to play in the first half gave HPU a 21-20 lead. However, the Golden Eagles then went on a 7-0 run to gain the advantage. The visitors held the lead for the rest of the half, but HPU stayed close and trailed 42-36 at the break.
UMC continued to hold the lead early in the second half, the Sharks' deficit ballooned to 11 with 15:53 to play. HPU then caught fire and reeled off the next 12 points to take a 58-57 lead on a three-pointer from
Dayanara Armenta.
Veanne Navarro scored four of her 12 points during the run. The visitors briefly regained the lead on the next trip down the floor, but an old fashioned three-point play from
Chenise Peone gave HPU the lead for good with 11:59 left. Leading 71-68 with less than five minutes to go,
Morganne Comstock hit back-to-back baskets and Huerta nailed a three-pointer, one of her four on the day, to give HPU a 10 point lead and ice the game.
The Sharks stepped it up in the second half, shooting nearly 53% (18-24) from the floor and 46% (6-13) from distance.
Peone finished the game with 19 points, including three triples, to go with six rebounds. Comstock scored 15 points and also grabbed six rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
The Sharks return to the floor on Tuesday for an in-region matchup against Montana State-Billings at 4:30 p.m. at Moanalua High School.
