Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 4, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (5-1, 1-0) started off the conference season with a convincing 86-53 win over BYU-Hawaii (2-2, 0-1) on Thursday night at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
The game started out evenly with the visitors taking the lead twice in the opening nine minutes. With 11:11 to play in the first half, HPU trailed 21-20. However, the ensuing 17-6 HPU run gave the lead back to the Sharks.
Morganne Comstock was huge during that stretch, notching nine points in the spurt including a pretty and-one play. HPU kept the 10 point lead at the break at 41-31.
The Sharks came out hot in the second half, scoring the first eight points to put HPU in firm control at 49-31 with 17:48 to go. HPU didn't stop there; the lead grew to 20 on a jumper by
Dayanara Armenta (16:04) and then to 30 on a Comstock free throw (8:01). With 4:46 to play,
Kerianne Noonan gave HPU its largest lead of the night at 34 points on a layup.
It was a well rounded team effort with 11 Sharks seeing the floor, nine saw double-digit minutes. Four of the five starters notched double-figure scoring nights paced by Comstock's 21.
Chenise Peone (16),
Kylie Huerta (13) and
Veanne Navarro (11) all had good offensive nights. Comstock had team-highs in the major three categories as she added nine rebounds and four assists.
HPU again shot the ball well, converting 32-57 (56.1%) while limiting BYU-H to 18-52 (34.6%).
The Sharks are back in action on Saturday as UH Hilo visits the Blaisdell Center at 1:00 pm.
